The Birmingham League Division 5 team finished fifth last
season.
BDCL Division 5
Fixtures & Results 2007-08
West Mids Police v Olton
Richard Liszewski was the only convincing winner on board 1, but Jim
Gillespie also scraped a win on 2. Dave Stockwin could not cope with his
opponent's Stonewall on board 3 and Bram Garner seemed not to want to do
anything but lose on 4. Stuart Bradley managed a well-earned draw on board 5,
but Peter Simpson lost on 6 to lose the match by the same score as last season.
Olton v Westminster
Pete Singh in as reserve got a win by default and the rest of the team proceeded
to win the match convincingly. Second reserve John Clulee managed to win bottom
board and Bram Garner again did everything to lose, but this time the opponent
was too clever for him and the game was drawn. Dave Stockwin on board three also
drew, but Richard Liszewski and Jim Gillespie on the top boards both won to take
the match.
Olton v Shirley & Lucas
The match stood at 2-2 with Jim Gillespie and John Clulee still to
finish. Richard Liszewski won on top board and Bram Garner won on four, but Dave
Stockwin and Peter Simpson lost. Jim was able to convert his game to at least
secure a drawn match. John went on to lose.
Kynoch/Barn v Olton
Olton won this match after Jim Gillespie and Richard Liszewski won their games
and Dave Stockwin drew. Bram Garner and Stuart Bradley lost, but there was a
welcome return to the team for Tony Goldwater, who won his game.
Olton v Bushbury
Richard Liszewski had a convincing win on board 1, Dave Stockwin on
three and Stuart Bradley on five also won fairly quickly. Jim Gillespie on
board 2 had a small but significant advantage, his opponent's three 'f' pawns
looking vulnerable. Eventually, Jim won a rook with a Knight fork. Tony
Goldwater on bottom board looked lost early on, but rallied and seemed to have
an advantage. Then the game turned away from Tony, but he re-took the advantage
later on and went on to win. Bram Garner had all the aces in his game, but
things went wrong and he was the only loser in the team.
Olton v Mutual Circle
Richard Liszewski had another win on board one. Dave Stockwin followed this with
a win on three. Bram Garner lost on board 4, but there were wins for Stuart
Bradley and Tony Goldwater (again) on the bottom boards. Captain Jim Gillespie
took a draw when the match was still in doubt.
Warley Quinborne v Olton
Richard Liszewski went a pawn up at the expense of his position, but
a combination of skill and luck took him to a drawn Rook & Pawn endgame. Jim
Gillespie was less than complimentary to his own play, missing a win and
eventually drawing on board 2. Dave Stockwin on three fell for a Bishop pin of
his King & Queen, but Stuart Bradley won quickly on board 6. A welcome return
for Warren Archibald saw him draw while a pawn up, but Bram Garner lost on time
a Bishop up in a tidy position.
Redditch v Olton
Jim Gillespie, Bram Garner and Mike Kerr drew the top boards. Tony
Goldwater lost his game, but Pete Singh won board 5 and Courtney Kerr drew
bottom board to level the match. A good result with 4 reserves.
South Birmingham v Olton
Richard Liszewski lost on top board, but Jim Gillespie won on two.
Dave Stockwin lost on three, but Warren Archibald levelled the score on four.
Stuart Bradley won board 6, leaving Bram Garner to decide the result, his draw
winning the match.
Birmingham University v Olton
Not the best of nights for the team. Jim Gillespie lost on board 1,
as did Dave Stockwin on two. Warren Archibald drew on board 3 and Bram Garner
lost on four. Pete Singh had a spectacular loss on bottom board, but at least
Stuart Bradley won board 5.
Olton v Tamworth
Mick Kerr's board 5 opponent failed to show and Olton were soon three
up, after wins from Warren Archibald and Dave Stockwin on two and three. Pete
Singh won board 5 and Jim Gillespie eventually found the answer on top board.
Bram Garner was the only loser on board 4, after being a pawn up.
Olton v Boldmere
Due to a breakdown, the visitors defaulted bottom board. Peter
Simpson on board 5 added to the home advantage, going a piece for 2 pawns up,
but no-one quite knows how. Mick Kerr had the better of his game, but could only
draw on 4. Dave Stockwin had an entertaining and relatively quick win on board
2. His opponent arrived late and was soon being forced to march his King to e4
and certain demise. With the match won, Jim Gillespie pressed home his advantage
on top board, eventually getting a pawn to the point of promotion. Bram Garner
adjourned with his opponent's Bishop causing mayhem in the home camp, but the
resulting loss was academic.
