South Birmingham v Olton The 22nd annual meeting with South Birmingham was another one-sided affair, but it was still enjoyed by those who took part. With the Olton 2A v 2B match the following night, several players were unavailable. The match was played over 19 boards, with the opponents lending Olton a player. Bram Garner was the first Olton player to get an early bath and he was swiftly followed by Bill Yeomans and John Clulee. Keith Lawson and Peter Simpson were the brighter notes on the bottom boards, both scoring draws. Frank Jimenez scored a draw on board 11 and Dave Brown on 10 won his game. However, Dave Stockwin and Tom Evans were less successful, as was substitute Paul Swatridge. Later, Rob Wallman and Pete Singh were also to succumb. On the top boards, Phil Holt eventually lost on board 1, Alan Lloyd failed to arrive on two and Richard Smith lost an entertaining game where the pieces forgot which side they were on. Mark Cundy had a great win on board 4, one of only 2 for the visitors. Richard Reynolds agreed a draw with a slight advantage after a difficult opening and Robert Reynolds also drew. John Asbury's reasonable-looking game deteriorated slowly to eventual defeat.
Olton v Shirley & Lucas This was played on Tuesday 19th August at Olton's venue. Shirley were a player short, so Olton lent them one and the match was played over 13 boards. Steve Chadaway was an early winner on board 6. Mark Cundy looked to be gaining an early advantage, but Bill Yeomans on bottom board was already material down. Mick Kerr on board was a little generous with his pieces, but Tom Evans on 10 had better luck. Later, Bram Garner looked to be pressing home the advantage on board 11, but dithered a little towards the end. Rob Wallman's King looked in dire trouble on board 4, but the game ended in a draw, as did Trevor Holt's board 5 game. Wins at the end for Phil Holt and Mark Cundy ensured that Olton won by a comfortable margin.
