Olton v South Birmingham The 23rd annual meeting with South Birmingham took place at Olton's venue on Tuesday 1st September 2009. Despite the relative weakness of the opposition, Olton still failed to impress on the night.
Only Alan Lloyd and Robert Reynolds earned any points on the top boards, with Richard Reynolds scoring a draw in a worse position. Robert's position quickly went quite 'Random' and his opponent's less than accurate play resulted in a win. Lower down, John Asbury drew early on, while Dave Stockwin and Jim Gillespie also scored draws. Andy Cottom was soundly squashed by a King's-side attack on board 9 and Warren Archibald lost on board 11. Bram Garner managed a good win on board 16 and Peter Simpson drew on board 18, but Keith Lawson had a surprise loss on 14 and Pete Singh threw a good position away on board 17. Olton lent South Birmingham Bill Yeomans for their bottom board and John Clulee was able to win the game on time. Olton v Shirley & Lucas This was played on Thursday 13th August at Wythall House, Wythall. It proved to be a disaster for Olton, who should have been the stronger team on the day. There were few crumbs of comfort for the visiting team. Phil Holt's win in spectacular fashion on top board, Gary Hope's win on board 7 and Trevor Holt careful and seemingly endless torture of Gordon Christie on board 6. Other than a couple of draws for Robert Reynolds on five and a last gasp draw for Richard Liszewski on eight, it was a poor showing by the Olton team.
