LDCL Division 1B

Fixtures & Results 2007-08

Stratford A v Olton B
Richard Reynolds held on for 30 or so moves before losing on board 1. Dave Cheshire had an uneventful draw on three, but Gary Hope's draw on 4 was the result of a time scramble and more than a little luck. Richard Smith got a passed pawn on the sixth, but gave up a piece in the process. The game went to the last few minutes and after several blunders on both sides, Richard lost on time a rook for bishop up.

Olton v Solihull A
Matthew Tapp had the upper hand in the opening against Richard Reynolds, but then it looked as though the tables turned. The ensuing attack failed to press home, but the ending was agreed drawn. Trevor Holt had a good win on two, finishing material up after a tricky series of tactical exchanges. Dave Cheshire had a safe draw on board three and Gary Hope won bottom board after gaining a slight advantage early on.

Nuneaton v Olton
Trevor Holt managed a draw on board 3 despite forgetting his glasses. Richard Reynolds got into the wrong side of a Queen's gambit, but pulled through to a drawn position on board 2. Dave Cheshire went an exchange for Pawn down, but also held on for a draw on bottom board. Richard Smith on one looked most likely to win, but this game also failed to reach a clear conclusion.

Olton v Banbury
Richard Smith had a complicated opening on top board. A small disadvantage in material did not seem to matter and it looked like a win or draw were likely, but Richard eventually conspired to lose. Richard Reynolds looked under pressure early on, but the attack fell away and the opponent's position crumbled quite suddenly. Dave Cheshire playing on board three had a fairly uneventful game, which was eventually drawn. Gary Hope, a piece up for what seemed like ages finally finished the game to take the match.

Leamington v Olton
Richard Reynolds drew on two after a fairly boring Ruy Lopez, While Dave Cheshire on four also drew. Trevor Holt lost on board 3. Richard Smith lost on top board to lose the match 3-1.

Olton v Shirley & Lucas
Richard Reynolds lost on one, but should have drawn after a rare error by his opponent. Richard Smith on two looked to have a promising position, but this became more and more desperate as time ran short. Dave Cheshire drew safely on board three and Trevor Holt had a good win on board 4.

Olton v Kenilworth
Ken Allen brought in as reserve had a good win on board 4, against a tricky opponent. Dave Cheshire had a safe draw on board 3, but the top two were both looking difficult. Richard Smith eventually gained an advantage and won when his opponent blundered. Richard Reynolds was defending a typically Alamo-like position and held out in a minor piece and pawns ending for a draw.

Olton A v Olton B
Martin Smyth on top board for the B team looked to have an easy win against Phil Holt at one point. Richard Reynolds drew on three against Mark Cundy in an eventful game, while Dave Cheshire drew against Rob Wallman on four. Richard Smith on board 2 beat Alan Lloyd, while Martin only drew on one.

Shirley v Olton
A strong Shirley side managed to overcome the team, but it was a good performance by Olton. Richard Smith drew on board 1 and Dave Cheshire drew on two. Ken allen drew on three, but Paul Hodgskin lost on board 4.

Banbury v Olton
Richard Reynolds had a bad start, but sacrificed a bishop to win in style on board 3. Dave Cheshire on four had a similarly exciting win. However, Martin Smyth on one sacrificed a piece for two pawns and then lost his queen. Richard Smith held a tricky position on board 2 to win the match.

Olton v Leamington
The two safest looking games were on boards one and four, but it was Richard Smith and Richard Reynolds on two and three that negotiated difficult positions for two draws. Dave Cheshire on four lost inexplicably and Martin Smyth's complicated position was also lost.

Olton B v Olton A
Richard Reynolds v Robert Reynolds on board 2 was a bore-draw, as was Gary Hope v Rob Wallman on three. Richard Liszewski was being slowly ground down by Mark Cundy on board 4. Both had passed pawns in the centre, but Mark eventually won the ending. Meanwhile, Phil Holt was having a brainstorm on top board, so martin Smyth leveled the score for the B side.

Kenilworth v Olton
Dave Cheshire was first to draw on bottom board, the pieces barely making it past the second rank. Richard Smith completed his survey of the Kenilworth gyratory system before getting into typical 'Opening no-mans land'. Later, it looked as though he might have an advantage, but the game was drawn. Martin Smyth on top board finally produced some form in a fixture not involving two Olton teams and the team took the lead. Richard Reynolds on board 3 once again held an advantage against his opponent, but was unable to press it home for the nth time and drew to win the match.

Olton v Nuneaton
Richard Smith playing on board 2 had an easy win when his opponent allowed a Knight-fork on his King and Queen. Richard Reynolds on three got into difficulty early on and went a pawn down with a bad position. Fortunately, it was more difficult than it seemed to break down and the game ended in a draw. Dave Cheshire on board 4 had a fairly open game, but this was also drawn. Martin Smyth on top board found himself facing an unstoppable passed pawn and lost to draw the match.

Olton v Stratford
Richard Reynolds drew on three, without any real chances of winning. Richard Smith on two went a little material down, but his opponent blundered and lost. Dave Cheshire agreed a draw a dodgy pawn up and Martin Smyth bored his way to a draw on top board.

Solihull v Olton
Martin Smyth's position on top board looked fairly miserable early on and it was eventually lost. Richard Reynolds on three scored an early, but uneventful draw, while Richard Smith on board two absorbed early pressure to also draw. Dave Cheshire on bottom board had his pieces well played and eventually took advantage to draw the match.
