Leamington League Lightning

Phil Holt has won the Leamington League's annual 5-minute Tournament. He scored an impressive 8½ out of 9, drawing only in the last round. There was a strong field of 28 entrants, including six players from Olton. Matthew Tapp of Solihull was second and Ian Brodie, also from Solihull, won the Under 125 section.

Phil also won the Stanley Gibbins trophy for best overall performance. He was unbeaten and scored 85% in League competitions.

BDCL Lightning Tournament

This was held at the Club on Tuesday 10th March. Teams of 4 players competed in two graded sections at the rate of 10 seconds per move. Section A contained 6 teams, including Olton A and Olton B, as well as the reigning Champions South Birmingham A.

Round 1 saw the Olton and South Birmingham A and B teams face each other, as is customary in these tournaments. South Birmingham A slipped up, by only scoring 2-2 with their B team. Olton A won three games, with Phil Holt on one, Alan Lloyd on two and Robert Reynolds on board three scoring. Richard Liszewski on four for the B team won his game.

In Round 2, The A team had a disastrous encounter with South Birmingham A, scoring just one draw. The B team faced Mutual Circle A and once again scored one win, this time from Ken Allen on three, but all the others lost.

The A team played South Birmingham B in round 3, scoring a comfortable if not convincing 3 out of 4. The B team were playing a combined Warley Quinborne/West Bromwich side. They once again failed to make much impact, with Richard Liszewski once again winning on bottom board.

The A team had a 2½-1½ win over Mutual in round 4, while the B team finally awoke against South Birmingham B, winning 3½-½. The A team finished with another 2½-1½ against Warley/West Bromwich and were second overall on 11½. The B team scored 1½ against South Birmingham A and were equal third on 8 points.

In section B, Olton C started slowly, with just one point against Sutton Coldfield and two against Mutual Circle B. Their performance did not improve much in round 3, 4 and 5, losing 4-0 to Shirley & Lucas. However, they rallied with a 3-1 win over Olton D and a 2-2 against Boldmere in the last round. The final tally was 9½ points, a long way behind the eventual winners.

The Olton D side scored a 2-2 draw with Mutual C and recorded odd points against Boldmere, Sutton and Olton C, finishing with 5½ points. Nevertheless, all the players taking part had an enjoyable evening.

Club Knockout Tournament

Robert Reynolds is organising a time-handicap Knockout Tournament. The first round has been drawn and fixtures are to be completed as soon as possible. Time constraints are high on the stronger players, so expect some surprises. There are 2 games per tie. If the score is level after this, a coin is tossed for colour and White gets 6 minutes, but must win. Black gets 5 minutes and needs at least a draw.
