Olton Summer Tournament 2008

This will take place over around 10 weeks, starting in May. More news will be available here later.

BDCL Lightning Team Tournament

This took place at Olton's venue on Tuesday 11th March. 13 teams were entered in all and the event was ably run by Lee Collier and Mike Walker, assisted by Chris Evans.  Moves were played every 10 seconds in a fast and furious atmosphere.

The A side facing with Phil Holt (left), Alan Lloyd and Robert Reynolds. The C team are in the background.

The tournament was divided into two sections, Section A with 6 teams and Section B with 7. Olton entered three teams, two of which were in the top section. The A team consisted of Phil Holt, Alan Lloyd, Robert Reynolds and Rob Wallman. In the B side, we had Richard Reynolds, Mark Cundy, Jim Gillespie and Pete Singh. The C team had five players, Bram Garner, Mick & Courtney Kerr, John Clulee and Bill Yeomans.

Bram Garner and John Clulee play against South Birmingham C. Phil Holt on board 1 against South Birmingham B.

Phil Holt scored an impressive 5 out of 5 and there were other good performances in the A team. The A v B match was a 4-0 win for the A side and they followed this up with a 3½-½ in the second match. The last round was a decider between Olton A and South Birmingham A. Olton needed a positive score to win the tournament, but the opponents held on for a win by 16½ points to 15.

The B team fared less well, with a fairly weak Section A team. The high point was a draw in the last match against Walsall Kipping. Mark Cundy and Jim Gillespie won, but Richard Reynolds overstretched on top board and went on to lose, not for the first time. The team were second last on 3½ points.

South Birmingham C with late substitute Dave Brelsforth. (rIght) Bill Yeomans in action with the rest of the C team.

The C team had a mixture of performances on the night, but it was all enjoyed in good spirit. The team were last on three points.

Thanks go to those who stepped in at late notice to organise the event.
